EDMOND, Okla. — With a 69-14 loss to Edmond Santa Fe Friday night, Enid's losing streak stretched to 14 games. After the lopsided defeat, Plainsmen head coach Rashaun Woods made it clear the team needs to continue refining for the future.

"Just from a physical and an execution stand point, it just has to continue to improve," Woods said. "We've got to win more of the matchups. We're not winning many of the matchups out on the field. When we get in that situation it makes it extremely tough."

Enid fell behind early, trailing the Wolves 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. The deficit increased to 42-0 by halftime as the Plainsmen offense sputtered and the defense couldn't hold its ground.

Santa Fe scored its first 28 points in a span of four minutes in the first quarter. Following an unsuccessful opening drive by Enid, the Wolves put together an 11-play 90-yard drive that was capped off by a 1-yard run by Santa Fe junior running back Ethan Hyche.

Wolves senior quarterback Jorgen Olsen had a part in Santa Fe's next three scores, converting one through the air and the other two with his legs. Olsen added another touchdown pass in the second quarter with a 27 yard connection to Talyn Shettron.

On the ensuing Enid drive, quarterback Maddux Mayberry threw his fourth interception of the season. Santa Fe defensive back L'Dai Hudson returned it more than 30 yards for yet another Wolves' touchdown.

Mayberry and fellow junior Blake Priest alternated possessions under center Friday night. Mayberry finished the night 5 of 8 for 78 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Priest also threw a touchdown and an interception while completing 8 of 19 attempts for 93 yards.

When asked if one quarterback in particular was rising above the other, Woods said, "They're both doing well."

Woods also said he plans to rotate Mayberry and Priest throughout the remaining four games of the season.

"We're getting those guys as many reps as we can to help them progress, so later on in the future we can make a decision moving forward," he said.

After the halftime break, Santa Fe extended its lead to 56-0 with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter. Junior running back Ethan Hyche scored the first on a 17-yard dash through the Enid defense. On the next Wolves' drive, backup quarterback Scott Pfieffer, a sophomore, connected with fellow classmate Eltramane Neal for a 35 yard score.

Enid's scoreless drought came to an end on the ensuing possession. With Priest under center, the Plainsmen were able to find the end zone for the first time on a 12-play 73-yard drive. After getting a 1st-and-goal from the Santa Fe 9, Enid backed itself up to a 4th-and-goal all the way back at the 24.

Priest took the shotgun snap and found Daigen Gibbens for the touchdown. The score was Priest's first touchdown pass on the season.

However, Enid's positive momentum was short lived as Santa Fe returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to make the score 63-7.

Mayberry's touchdown pass came on a 41-yard completion to Gibbens — who now has four on the season — midway through the fourth quarter.

The Enid coaching staff again filtered in several underclassmen during its game against Santa Fe. Woods said afterward he's won't shy away from that. He also took responsibility that the coaching staff has to evolve the players into athletes that can compete at the Class 6A-I level.

"We'll continue to play all of our guys throughout the entire season in order to continue to get better for the future," he said. "We got to continue to develop our guys. Our guys are working hard. They do have ability, but we have to continue to develop it the best we ca... Click here to read full article
